Aberford ParkAberford Park

Aberford Park was purchased in stages starting in 1888. After the First World War a sewage works was constructed, however, by the 1940/50s this was out of use and the area was used for landfill. Subsequently in the 1950/60s the area was landscaped and turned into a park and the lakes now form part of a flood relief system for the town. The park offers a range of other facilities including a Community Centre which has recently been modified to include a café and public toilets, play areas, a multi sports area, the Action Zone, CCTV cameras, areas of tree planting plus a pond and wildlife area. The park has enjoyed a high level of investment in recent years, particularly the construction of facilities aimed predominantly at teenagers, including a skate park, twin fly, climbing boulder and teen shelter. These are known collectively as the Action Zone, which is staffed, on a seasonal basis, by an Action Zone Leader who has a role in promoting activity amongst young people. It is intended to improve the park year on year in partnership with the local community. Due to its proximity to the BBC and Elstree Film Studios the park has also been used for several films and television programmes such as Eastenders, Grange Hill and Birds of a Feather. During 2007 a range of events were held in the park, including an Easter egg hunt, a bat walk, a torch safari and a carol service.
